Pension Clicks

In this edition of Pension Clicks, we summarise the White Paper on protecting DB pension schemes, explore why workplace pension outcomes depend on shared engagement and look at whether your scheme can afford (not) to increase DC contributions.

White Paper – protecting defined benefit pension schemes
The Government’s White Paper proposes punitive fines against those who deliberately put their pension scheme at risk, a tighter framework for notifiable events, requiring a Chair's statement from DB trustees, and strengthening funding standards. Our paper provides more details.

Why workplace pension outcomes depend on shared engagement
Outcomes delivered by employer pension schemes depend more than ever on levels of engagement, so companies must create good quality schemes and successfully communicate their benefits. Read more in our article from The Times Workplace Pension Report.

Can your scheme afford (not) to increase contributions?
How are DC schemes tackling the challenge of auto-enrolment? Steven Leigh draws on findings from our 2017 DC Scheme Survey in this article, first published in Professional Pensions.

Do your trustee meetings have the best framework?
Pension trustees meet on average four times a year, so using this time to make key decisions and progress essential items is crucial. How can you maximise the effectiveness of your trustee meetings?

Download our behavioural checklist for chairing meetings
Our research with behavioural agency Behave London looked at scheme decision-making and planning strategy. Among other things, this work showed that how a meeting is chaired has a direct impact on the decisions made and how effective those decisions are. Our checklist helps combat behavioural biases when planning for and chairing meetings.

Risk Settlement Market Update
Our annual summary of business placed in the risk settlement market shows that in 2017, spare capacity for both pensioner buy-ins and full scheme deals was not fully utilised. We predict a record £30bn bulk annuity market in 2018 due to a favourable pricing period for annuities, while interest in longevity swaps is also rising following market re-pricing.

Risk Settlement Annual Review
Our annual Review looks at 2017 activity and shares findings from our first Risk Settlement Survey. If you are thinking about pension risk transfer, it has invaluable tips and suggestions to ensure you are prepared.

Aon in the press
This month, we point out that the DWP White Paper is still a shade of green and that new Pensions Regulator powers will not be enough to solve distressed pension schemes’ issues. In addition, we believe that employers need clarity on Government’s decision to keep the salary sacrifice childcare voucher scheme open for further six months.

We also state our belief that trustees’ focus should remain on the performance of the overall board, and comment on the new Continuous Mortality Investigation model, as Mike Edwards joins our Risk Settlement team.
