Aon Empower Results

Pension Clicks

In this edition of Pension Clicks, we summarise the DWP’s changes to trustees’ investment duties, explore a potential secret to success in improving your scheme’s outcomes and examine the investment opportunities presented by global infrastructure equity.

Trustee investment duties amended
The DWP has confirmed changes to trustees’ investment duties that will become effective in October 2019. The Statement of Investment Principles will need to set out additional information, including how trustees take account of the views of members (if at all) and climate change. Money purchase schemes will need to disclose the new information online and also produce an implementation report.

The secret to success
Tim Giles explores why being ‘active’ is key to improving your pension scheme’s outcomes, in this article first published in Professional Pensions.

Global infrastructure equity – opportunities in the pipeline
Extensive infrastructure policies in the UK, US and elsewhere have attracted investor attention, although so far investor exposure to infrastructure has been low. In our new whitepaper, we outline why infrastructure merits inclusion in investor portfolios and identify the potential opportunities and risks.

Essential ideas for getting messages to members
Lynda Whitney chaired Aon’s recent Better DC Decisions Workshop where Behave London’s Hannah Lewis ran an excellent session for delegates about behavioural member communications. Here Lynda lists some of her favourite tips for great scheme communication taken from the workshop.

Take part in another experiment!
In the spring, we invited you to get involved in some experiments as part of The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ sponsored research into the behavioural aspects of pension scheme decision-making, which Aon is supporting. You can read more about the initiative here. Thank you to those of you who took part in the last round of experiments. If you enjoyed them and would like to do some more or if you’re keen to get involved, please click here to take part in a new set of quick-fire experiments from City, Leeds and UEL Universities.

Aon in the press
This month, we advise Greene King’s Spirit Scheme and the AA on their first bulk annuities. We point out that corporate failures highlight the need for greater financial scrutiny by pension trustees. Our new whitepaper highlights the challenges in the ‘at retirement’ market and we explore the digital-age reasons your benefits programme may not be working. We also expand our DC team with the appointments of Adam Fisher and Damon Hopkins.
